Christmas/Shirley Temple/Casinos

Christmas has come and is on its way out. As I sit and write at 9:40pm, Christmas 2010 has been successful. Successful in meaning that major $ for presents or food weren't spent. And yet the outcome was just as happy as if we spent major bucks. We aren't the crazy gift giving fiends that will give whatever to whoever just to make them happy. I know people who are like that and their credit card companies love them.

I don't mean successful in being happy with the gifts received and given. I mean in a more human level. I can reflect back on previous Christmases when the boys were little and Santa *really* did come down the chimney and leave sooty boots prints on the carpet. At least, Santa did that for a few years. For several years, Christmas morning meant waking up at 6am with the boys yelling that Santa had come. No amount of begging to make them go back to sleep for a few hours worked.

I remember as a 9 year old girl (brat) that got 3 Shirley Temple dolls for one Christmas. I was so upset I spent the rest of my Christmas in my room crying. I thought for sure I was being punished. I hated Shirley Temple - she still annoys me. It would have been helpful if my grandmothers and aunt had somehow communicated to let each other know they were going to buy that hideous doll. But, no and that's how I ended up with 3. I don't recall what happened to those dolls. But, I wish I had them now. They're worth a small fortune (damn!).

The early Christmases of marriage were more romantic and suspenseful. Today, the husband was very happy with his new 7 page-at-a-time paper shredder. The longer you stay together, gifts seem to become less important and given with reason of necessity. I got a new laptop a few weeks ago for my gift. We spend a lot of time going out to casinos for fun as a couple. We did that a few days ago; part of my present was breaking even. You can win two ways at a casino. One, you actually leave with more money than you entered with and two, you break even. I'm happy when either of those occur.
 Peace.
